Main cause of loss of lead-acid battery storage capacity
Sulfation

Sulfation is the creation of hard crystaline lead sulphate on the battery plates. When a battery is being discharged, it is normal for it to create soft lead sulfate. When the battery is charged the soft lead sulfate dissolves back into the sulfuric acid solution. However if the battery is left uncharged or not recharged to 100% full, then the remaining soft lead sulfate can crystalise and build up on the lead plates. As the lead sulfate crystals build up on the plates, the capacity of the battery to store energy decreases. Also as the sulfate builds up on the plates they cause an increased resistance which causes the plates to heat up and buckle.

According to the World Battery Committee, about 75% of the world’s lead acid batteries are discarded simply because of crystaline sulfation build up on the lead plates.
